PM Gilani terms Mehdi Hassan a great asset

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday described Mehdi Hassan an asset to the country and announced Rs 50,000 per month life-time assistance for the legendary singer.

Talking to the Ghazal maestro at his residence here, the prime minister said his services for the country will always be remembered. The prime minister said Mehdi Hasan had earned a great name for Pakistan and the people and the country were proud of him.

Besides Rs 50,000 per month lifetime assistance for Mehdi Hasan, he also promised jobs for his two grandchildren. The prime minister promised that he would talk to the chief minister Punjab for promotion of his son Sajjad Mehdi from the rank of inspector of police to the rank of DSP.

Mehdi Hassan started his career from the Radio Pakistan in early 1950s and never looked back since. He virtually ruled the film industry as playback singer from up to late 1980s. Many of his movie-based Ghazals have become classics.

He has huge following in the Sub-continent and across the world wherever Urdu is understood or spoken. He has been off the limelight as he has not been keeping good health for the past many years. Prime Minister Gilani prayed for his health. He directed the Sheikh Zaid Hospital authorities to provide the best treatment to the singer and the government will bear all the expenses.
